Minnesota Morning: CoCo Pitch Night, Prime Digital Academy Graduates And Super Bowl “Help Wanted”
The Super Bowl is 6 days away and if you have been in Downtown Minneapolis you are fully aware of the impact. Last week with the snow storm and Super Bowl preparations parking became a pain and traffic patterns interrupted. Not a big deal as long as one plans ahead. Areas near US Bank Stadium and Nicollet Mall were seeing final touches on venues Friday and I took a walk down the Nicollet Mall to get some photos. Good news is last weeks snow storm dropped a blanket of fresh snow. More good news...

State Of Startup Recruiting
The past months I have been talking with a number of Midwest startup CEO’s, CTO’s and non tech Co Founder’s about recruiting and what to expect in 2018. The main point I left with all of them is that they as individuals need to spend more of their work and personal time on it. My experience is that Bay Area CEO’s will spend up to a third of their time recruiting. And in the Midwest… CEO’s generally spend much less time than that. And yet, everyone knows that recruiting is...

Q&A With Minnesota Headhunter: An Intro To The Minnesota Startup And Tech Scene
As 2017 was winding down I was getting a number of inquiries about the Minnesota startup and tech scene from people outside Minnesota. I think the recruiting trip to Chicago, the Fly in Program during Twin Cities Startup Week and my own sourcing and recruiting is the cause of this. Most inquiries are coming from a few regions: San Francisco and Silicon Valley Chicago, Detroit… Midwest Seattle Austin and Dallas And I have not yet put together a list of resources or guide to send them. So…...

Minnesota Morning: Happy New Year And Winter 2018 Minnesota Tech And Startup Events
My favorite New Year’s Day quote: “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.” - Edith Lovejoy Pierce I don’t get nostalgic about the end of the year and I don’t do resolutions. I do like the idea of new beginnings and the optimism a new year brings. It feels fresh. 2017 for me was a full year personally and professionally with a lot of good change and some big steps...

The Voice of IT
Domestic Migration and you
So for some time we’ve seen companies in several growth area’s in the country be unable to fill their technology jobs in a timely fashion.  This can be chalked up to many factors (including companies attempting to hold wages down, their unwillingness to utilize recruiters and being highly inflexible as to the skills and experience of candidates), and quite frankly its put them in a difficult position. However, that may begin to change.  With the report that the housing...

The Voice of IT
No Magic Bus Full of Candidates
Most of the time I talk with companies today all I hear them saying is “I want it, I want it, I want it” and I believe The Who had it right when they said “Can’t have it” because this is what recruiters need to be prepared to tell their unrealistic hiring officials and clients in today’s market. All too many times we recruiters are talking to IT Managers and Human Resource professionals about the jobs they just can’t seem to fill only to hear them...

The Voice of IT
IT Training or lack thereof
Well I heard it on the news today that US corporations are again asking the federal government to allow more visa’s for foreign workers at high level technical and various other professional positions (including IT roles).  Sure I agree that there may in fact be “shortages” of people who have a specific IT skill sets, but what I don’t agree with is why we don’t have people with these skills or how companies currently hire.  Here’s a good article on...

The Best Boss I Never Had
If you're like me, you've had quite a few bosses over the years. Some were good, some were bad, some were great, and some you'd rather forget. So what makes a great boss? Now I'm completely aware that the challenges I've faced with my bosses over the years say at least as much about me as it does about them. That being said, let's take a look at the hypothetical best boss I never had. The best boss I never had is extremely loyal to the team. The best boss I never had takes complete responsibility...

Top 10 Things that are Seldom Measured and Analyzed that Should Be
Corporate recruitment departments are usually extremely busy places. The focus is mostly on filling currently open requisitions. Satisfying the internal customers' immediate needs is paramount. Large quantities of fascinating data can be collected during that process but seldom are. My experience is that even when that data is collected, it is rarely analyzed. Following are some ideas about what to collect and analyze. Source of hire data is really important. It's relatively easy to collect...
