Virtual Bands Rock YouTube
ANYTOWN - This is just incredible.  Below are four musicians covering a Beatles song.  They're tight as a drum, and they're not in the same room.  It's quite possible that they are not even in the same timezone.  Perhaps they have never met in person.  Why bother?  What day-job working stiff among us has the time to hang out with garage band mates when the enterprise is unlikely to support itself financially?Anyway, the whole thing seems to have taken shape remotely and asynchronously. ...

Leadership: "Can I go to the Super Bowl with this Candidate?"
DALLAS, TX - Direct marketing consultant Ted Grigg had an excellent comment on my recent marketing post, Interviewing Tips: "What ELSE are you applying for?".  You can read Ted's comments here, but the gist of Ted's concern is that ..."Today's work world is is job driven rather than talent driven. So the only way to win now requires highly targeted resumes, focused elevator speeches and personal branding. That is all good, except that it can narrow the individual's true scope."I agree, and...

"Brother, can you spare $25,541.05?"
Maybe I have made an error with my math.  I hope so!  You tell me.According to this article, the U.S. government is prepared to dole out more than $7.76 trillion of taxpayers' money after guaranteeing $306 billion of Citigroup debt.  The pledges, amounting to half the value of everything produced in the nation last year, are intended to rescue the U.S. financial system.Let's see: "$7.76 trillion" is 7,760,000,000,000 ... divided by the total U.S. population of 303,824,640 ... equals...

More Resume Trickery!
BOSTON, MA - Today I was looking for a resume with the following keywords:coremetrics omniture SAS analytics decision store applications research merchandising behavioral usability “user experience” abandons consumer content agency multichannel dashboard statistics mining segmentation email testingAnd glory be!  After reviewing roughly 200 resumes, I found a guy who's introductory "Experience" paragraph included nearly every one of these terms.  Yet just before I bookmarked it (meaning...

Online Sales Fuel Drug Abuse
DID YOU KNOW?  According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, most websites that market controlled medications don't require a proper prescription -- a fact that Federal officials say fuels abuse of addictive prescription drugs.  The DEA claims that 85% of all online prescription drug sales involve controlled substances, compared with 11% of prescription drug sales at brick-and-mortar pharmacies.

Career Advice: "Stability through Versatility"
SEATTLE, WA - Odds are maybe 0.02% that you're a drummer, and only slightly higher that you're a musician.  No matter!  Marketing careerists, watch this video.  There's great career advice here.Rod Morgenstein is one of the world's greatest rock drummers. With the Dixie Dregs in the late 70's and early 80's, Mr. Morgenstein became well known for his playing on songs like Take It Off the Top.  The Dreg's Grammy-nominated sound was like a southern boogie version of the Jeff Beck Group -- and...

How Many Blogs Does the World Need?
NEW YORK, NY - Hat tip to Steve Rubel (of course), who "FriendFed" this article from Time.  I love Dave Winer's awesome response to Steve ..."When anyone asks a question about blogs, try substituting phones and see if the question still makes sense. I have two phones, at times I've had more. I have one blog right now, but again, at times I've had more. It's almost like asking how many word processing documents or spreadsheets does the world need?"Here's my hip shot: 8.5 million small businesses...

Interviewing Tips: "What ELSE are you applying for?"
CHICAGO, IL - One of my most promising employees is interviewing a ton of candidates for a role in Chicago.  The job is content related, which puts it on the edge of our strike zone as recruiters.  In fact, we took the search because we wanted to get better at working with online content editors.Don't forget, as contingency recruiters, it's our prerogative -- and occasionally we will stretch into strategically adjacent areas when we know the client is working with other recruiters and will not...

Web Marketing for Jobseekers
Great post this week on Lifehacker ... Keep a real web site with a custom domain for $10/year. In the way-early days of the web, having your "own web site" meant you were all kinds of experienced with servers, protocols, and rack mounting. These days, you don't even need your own hosted space to maintain a web presence—blogging platforms, page creators, and Google apps (out the wazoo) are practically begging to do all the heavy-code-lifting for you. With a $10-per-year domain name...

EARLY EDITION: Kyle Chandler!! Plus: Peter Ueberroth on Young Leaders and Resumes
SEATTLE - It was a bad week for Old Man Resume, which experts are decrying more loudly than ever.  Pass the salt: I may end up eating my hat after all. In the October 2 print edition of Human Resources Executive, Ron Selewach has written a very lucid special report called "No Resumes, Please."  According to Mr. Selewach, "80% of the nation's workforce does not have an updated resume, ..." (news to me) and that the vast majority of passive candidates is not likely to create one simply...

Steve Rubel's Lifestream
NEW YORK - Honestly, I don't know why I have 300-some odd blogs in my RSS reader.  There's only like 10 blogs that push the envelope in marketing.  Steve Rubel's Micro Persuasion is one of them.  Check out this post about Google and what Steve calls "lifestreaming."  Seriously: Take a minute to read Steve's post. [Cue Jeopardy music ...] ........ All done?  Did you see Steve's Google Profile all tricked out with his social media dealies on the right?  Here's mine. ...

Managing Creative Teams
LOS ANGELES, CA - This is an unbelievable deconstruction of a hit song ("Peg" by Steely Dan) played by the world's greatest session musicians in the 1970's.  These players knew they were great, too.  Big budget record.  High expectations.  Lots of egos in the room. Yet check out how Walter Becker and Donald Fagen allow the individual personalities to shine while preserving their own creative vision of what the final product should be.  A fine of example of what is meant...
