Digital Nomads
The Internet followed by recession has accelerated changes in how we work with more and more people working from home, hot desking, part-time, job sharing, second jobs, home based businesses etc. So what's the impact on recruitment particularly as we come out of recession and back into growth? Will the digital nomads be prepared to come back to the old world of employment? The concept of working from home, moving from job to job, business to business may sound like the ideal scenario to some but... |

Social media conferences: Time to stop talking and do more doing
I have been to two social media conferences in the last few weeks; TRU London and Like Minds. TRU was an unconference which was total chaos from an organisational stand point but fantastic as delegates were "free to roam" as they chose. Like Minds was a well oiled machine, with a fantastic lunch with a speaker set-up, some great speakers such as Chris Brogan and Joanne Jacobs but it was still very much speaking heads where we delegates did as we were told at the exact time we were told to do it!... |

Social recruiting: How not to #twinterview
You know you are losing it when this sounds like you. You introduce yourself with "Hello I'm @mary263, what's your twitter name?" You ask them to name their top 3 favourite #hashtags. You ask them to explain their biggest #failure and if it was a trending topic. You write #loser in your notes when the only LION's local watering hole they have been to was on a safari holiday. When you ask them to name their favourite Rockstar you expect names like Chris Brogan, Seth Godin, and Guy Kawasaki? You... |

Building a community - what technology platform should you choose?
Although you need to have a strategy that dictates the need for you to build a community, assuming you do, what about the technology? You can use Ning which is great and starts off as a free platform or you can get Jive which is the market leader with a Gucci price tag to match. A good start point is the Gartner, Inc.'s 2009 Magic Quadrant for Social Software in the Workplace which you can get from Jive if you register here. There is also the Enterprise Social Media event on 15/16 March at Olympia... |

Building a community - you get out what you put in - yes it takes time!
The next time a recruiter complains they do not have time to use social media to build a community of great candidates remind them why vegetables are often tasteless these days; a bit much like most of their (candidate) relationships. You can force nature but you ultimately pay the price! What is the point of spending all of your time doing indiscriminate job advertising across job boards/channels that don't work and more importantly, not bothering to measure any of it and just doing more. Farmers... |

#trulondon What was the ROI?
First of all I have to say well done to Bill Boorman for pulling off the most enjoyable social media event the UK has had so far this year. But, was it just a great big jolly for the social media guru's that inhabit this earth to pump up each other's ego's with heartily applause (at the end of tracks), create more lovely video footage (for all their blogs) and generally drink beer (plenty of evidence to support this) while we all bowed to the greater force now known as social media? And was there... |

Job seekers own your employer brand
Remember when employer brand was something the employer/ad agency controlled? Not any more. PEOPLE LISTEN TO OTHER PEOPLE You know what you do when you want to buy something. Google it, read online reviews, customer feedback, who bought what etc. Ultimately your decision is swayed by people you do not know and by the actions they take. YOUR EMPLOYEES SAY IT HOW IT REALLY IS Even if social networks are blocked employees will have their say. Other people will hear and discuss. Opinions will be formed.... |

Don't get lost with Social Recruiting
Another short social recruiting analogy. If you don't know where you are going, you'll get lost. Make sure you know how Facebook, Twitter etc fit with your overall recruitment strategy. Obvious I know. |

Why posting jobs to Twitter is no different to RSS
There are as ever many opinions about having automated job feeds on Twitter. Matt Alder wrote a post last week Why Twitter is the future of job boards which generated a few different opinions on the matter. Shall we just get our heads out of our backsides and let the Follower decide just like they do with RSS? There is plenty of information on the web which of course includes Twitter. The beauty of RSS is that you control what you subscribe to which is no different to Twitter. If you don't want... |

Social Recruiting Analogy with a Difference
Hopefully this will help you make some sense of social recruiting - then again maybe not. |

Facebook Pages - Fad or Future?
Who knows where Facebook Pages could end up but after my last post where I suggested greater integration with your ATS and maybe using a Page instead of a Career Site(!) could the humble FB Page play a bigger part than we think? I for one think Facebook will be around for a very long time and will continue to grow and whilst they are currently considered the "non-work" social network this like many other things will change. I've heard the stories of the younger members starting to leave as Mum... |

Can a Facebook Page replace your Career Site?
According to New Media Age, brands such as Coke are starting to plan to build Facebook Pages and branded YouTube Pages instead of Campaign Sites. Hubspot blog goes into a bit more detail (and is worth reading) but in summary Coke want to go where the consumer is rather than drag them to a Coke site. So does the same strategy apply to potential candidates? Of course you have to make sure you have sufficient people on Facebook so let's take Graduates as an example as it is one of the most relevant.... |

Social Media World Forum - London - Enterprise Solutions
Just over 12-months ago I wrote a report about Social Media in the Workplace hoping that social networks would be freely available to all employees. So how does it look now? In many cases not much different, but things are changing fast. More and more enterprises are starting to share their experiences which will give more companies the confidence to create a more open, collaborative workplace. It may not result in everyone having access to Facebook and Twitter but at least work will become more... |

TRU London calling to the faraway towns
Now that recession is over-and recruitments back on London calling to the recruitment world Come out of the office, all you boys and girls London calling, now don't look at us All that phoney "no hiring" has bitten the dust London calling, see we ain't got nothing 'Cept for the cost of that ticket thing Listen to the original soundtrack - of course I can't write such a great song!! So are you going to TRU London? TRU London - the UK's only UNconference. No idea what future they hold or if indeed... |

Web 2.0 social media talent community recruitment manager
Yep, quite a job title! I had a conversation earlier this week with @lisascales about how her community technology platform can be used as part of a recruitment strategy. What was interesting though, is how we were saying the same but not (initially) speaking the same language. But what has this got to do with the job title? We started off debating the point of a community platform being used to build and maintain a talent pool. I felt that this type of technology better suited internal communities... |

Social Media World Forum - London
As social media infiltrates every aspect of recruiting we need to look outside our industry to how other sectors are using social media to drive their business. There are many conferences coming up over the next few months but one in particular I will be attending is the Social Media World Forum Europe on the 15-16 March that is being held at Olympia, London. There are some fantastic speakers (I'm not one - maybe next year!) but I'm particularly interested in some of the discussions around Mobile... |

Recruiters just wanna have fun!
Recruiting is a busy job - we all know that. But maybe a bit of fun with candidates is the order of the day. Stop hassling, selling, probing, assessing. Let candidates get to know you and your company. Spend some time on Twitter just having fun. Add some funky videos to YouTube. Make your Facebook Page amusing. Let the real "you" come out for a change. You may find it helps you hire better people! If it doesn't, at least you'll have had some fun and if your boss says "WTF"; just blame me. |

How a Customer chooses an ATS
If every ATS vendor builds an Applicant Tracking System that looks the same, costs the same and does pretty much the same; how do you choose? Of course they don't all look or do exactly the same but, in the eyes of an inexperienced Buyer they all feel the same. But what happens when half a dozen all build their ATS on the Salesforce platform? What then? How does the customer choose? It may seem like a pointless question right now but maybe it isn't. Maybe if technology vendors could look at themselves... |
