the first job board coupon book
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and JobTarget have released the first-ever job board coupon book featuring discounts from over 1,000 niche, diversity, and regional job boards. The discounts range from 5-50 percent off postings throughout 2009. The majority of coupons are redeemable on SHRM’s Job Posting Center (www.shrm.org/jpc). “We’re excited to offer all of these job boards and savings coupons in one centralized location,” says Gary Rubin, SHRM’s Chief Publishing... |

is there an hr guru inside you?
I recently came across another HR community (yes, I know there are literally gazillions of these, but couldn’t we use just one more?) that was created by the folks at the Monster-owned Affinity Labs. HRGuru was launched in late March 2008, just three months after Monster acquired Affinity Labs, a company that builds online communities to improve the lives, careers, and education of their members. Because of the paternal link to the grand daddy of all job boards, HRGuru has the largest... |

2009 predictions
In the years that I’ve been doing predictions, this round seems to be particularly difficult. Why? Well, the overall landscape is relatively depressing. For now at least, the days of new and interesting start-ups are on hold. The big guys aren’t exactly in an experimental mood. And even social networking seems sorta played now 5 years after the introduction of MySpace. That said, here’s my best shot at breaking out the crystal ball and taking a glimpse into 2009. “New”... |

joblighted: a single page job aggregator
Joblighted is a new job aggregator that tracks jobs from a variety of niche boards, including VentureBeat, Startuply, MetaFilter, and Coroflot. The small number of technical jobs (about 25,000) aggregated to the site works well because of the Google map at the top of the page that shows where each job is based. The relatively uncluttered map makes for easy navigation. Search functions allow the user to set up filters for job distance, location, date posted, and key words. The user can also sign... |

jobs and workers decrease
While fewer employers posted jobs online last November, fewer people were searching for work. Beyond.com recently released the results of the November 2008 Milgram Report, which is released every month and collects statistics and data from thousands of niche sites. The report showed that there was a 13.87 percent decrease in the total number of jobs posted during November 2008 when compared to October and that there also was a 6 percent decrease in the number of resumes posted. Candidates with... |

five-minute interviewing prep
For a low yearly fee, a new site claims to help job seekers prepare for an interview in about five minutes and receive job offers. Interviewing-101, a site that helps job seekers manage the task of preparing for an interview and securing a job, launched this week. The site, which was developed by search and recruiting experts, provides many resources, including tips for handling every step of the interview process. To gain access to the site, users must pay an annual $20 subscription fee. This... |

2009 hiring predictions
Most employers expect to make no major hiring changes next year, and those who do are taking it slow. However, companies are looking at ways to make business operations easier and more cost-effective. CareerBuilder recently released the results of its latest survey, 2009 Job Forecast, conducted by Harris Interactive. The survey, completed from November 12 to December 1, asked 3,259 hiring managers and human resource professionals in private sector companies about next year’s hiring trends.... |

a look back at our 2008 predictions
Predictions are fun. They give you freedom to be as nonsensical as you want. And they’re so much fun that we do them every year. But before looking forward, it’s entertaining to look back at the stuff that came before. At the dawn of 2008, we predicted: Recession - This was a pretty easy one, but few people expected it to be as bad as it was. And next year isn’t looking to be much better. Save us, Obi Won Obama. Lots of mergers and acquisitions - A good number of sites were... |

jobfox now charging for intros service
A reader wrote Cheezhead to complain about a recent change to Jobfox’s Intros program, which was introduced last summer. I went onto Jobfox today and found out that their “intros” is now a PREMIUM service that seekers have to PAY for. It works like this: Say that you are a 5 star candidate. Instead of being able to get an Intro for free, you have to pay a subscription of $30 per month to have a personal intro. Otherwise you are pretty much shown that sending your resume without... |

yahoo! hotjobs writer called out for ‘liberal bias’
Tom Musbach, a writer for Yahoo! Hotjobs, recently penned what seemed like a fairly innocuous article entitled, “Career Do’s and Don’ts.” The author selected examples of memorable figures from 2008, including Barack Obama, Michael Phelps, and Sarah Palin, and discussed how employees can harness these examples to get a leg-up in the corporate world. Here’s a snippet: 1. DO stay focused on achieving your goals, despite adversity or distractions. President-elect Barack... |

careerbuilder makes list of best places to work
CareerBuilder, who recently laid off an estimated 10 to 15 percent of their staff in early December, has been named one of the best places to work by Glassdoor, a site that surveys employees about work conditions and encourages worker to leave feedback about their jobs. Glassdoor surveyed over 11,000 companies operating in the United States before presenting their first annual Employees’ Choice Awards. Coming in at number eighteen, CareerBuilder was the only job board represented on the... |

‘rant’ sites not just for spurned employees
Ranting and raving is in our nature. Considering that many workers must cope with an 8-hour workday rife with feckless motions, it seems appropriate to have a forum where employees can vent their frustrations about their former or current job and maybe indulge in a cat fight or two. Lately it seems these sites are a dime a dozen. Techcrunch just reviewed a new one called Telonu (get it - tell on you?), and at Cheezhead we’ve posted a few notes about Glassdoor. Jobvent has been blogged about... |

yahoo! layoffs have little impact on hotjobs
It’s kind of a bad time to be working at Yahoo! It’s tough times working at a job board these days too. So, you’d think working at HotJobs, a job site owned by Yahoo!, would be doubly bad, right? Not quite, says a source close to the organization. Yahoo! spokesperson Kim Rubey wouldn’t reveal how many of the 1,500 job losses affected HotJobs directly. In fact, she didn’t really say much at all except that they’re constantly evaluating the business and looking... |

jobirn: chat in real time w/ recruiters and managers
Jobirn is a new online referral network that allows candidates to chat and interview in real time with recruiters and hiring managers that are profiled on the site. The interface is fairly simple and intuitive. As soon as you enter the site, a brief demo is displayed that shows you how to navigate the different features. Job applicants can create a file with their resume and other personal data. To chat in real time with a recruiter, right-click on any of the users listed under the employers/recruiters... |

glassdoor publishes ceo blacklist
Glassdoor, an online community where employees can rate the companies and bosses they work for, has compiled a list of CEOs who have received the highest approval and disapproval ratings on the site during the past year. Here are the results for the ‘nice’ CEOs: And here are the ‘naughty’ CEOs: The article along with feedback from people who worked under these CEOs can be found here. |
